Marina and I want to wish all the readers of our “Musings” a very Happy New Year, with much of God’s presence, peace and power. May you truly experience His blessing as you yield to Him and do His good and perfect will.
Years ago when I lived in California, USA, I met some young people who had attended Prairie Bible Institute (PBI) in Three Hills, Alberta. Several times I heard them talk about Maxwell 1:1. I became curious and asked them what they meant with that. They told me that Mr. Maxwell, the founder of the college had a certain message that he preached so often that the students started calling it Maxwell 1:1. I asked what the message was and they answered “Be Balanced.” Well, Mr. Maxwell has died and is in glory now, but I agree with him wholeheartedly. About the most important thing in life is being balanced, not going overboard one way or another. And this is good to be reminded of as we start a new year.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 says it so well, “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted,” and so on. I would like to mention two important things to keep in mind as we start 2016. The apostle Paul writes to the Philippians in chapter 3: “13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.” Yes, forgetting what’s past and pressing forward to what lies before.
Yet at the same time the Bible puts such emphasis on remembering. Again and again the Jewish people were reminded to remember what the Lord had done for them, just read Deuteronomy. The Psalmist was discouraged, until he remembered what the Lord had done in the past. Jesus asked us to remember Him and instituted the Lord’s table so that we wouldn’t forget Him.
So does the Bible contradict itself? Paul says, “forget”, while others say “remember”? No, I think what Paul means is that we are to forget the bad in the past, so that it won’t drag us down, as someone has said, “The past is past, because it has passed.” The others mean, to remember the good and be encouraged. Both are true, it is the balance we need. A good way to start the New Year, forget the bad things that happened to you and remember all the good you experienced, thank God and press on for Him and a dying world. Make a difference!
Next week we’ll go back to where we left off, 1983………! (Go to Musings).
