“Who needs the church?”

“I have Jesus, I don’t need the church.” I have heard this said, and that hurts me. Jesus says in Matt.18, “I will build my Church.” Many people when you ask them why Jesus came to earth will answer, “to die on the cross.” And of course, that is true, but why did He have to die on the cross? To pay for our sin, to redeem us and then to build His Church. He died, rose again, went back to heaven and on the day of Pentecost sent His Holy Spirit, for what purpose? To build His Church. The whole book of Acts is about the building of the church. The start and growth of the church and churches. Nine of the N.T. epistles are written to local churches, three to church workers and most of the rest to church members, so how can one miss the church, or say, “I don’t need the church?”

The church is one of God’s instruments to mold and make us into the image of His Son. He puts all Christians, imperfect and broken people, together in the church as rough diamonds who need to be cut. And that cutting happens when we rub shoulders with each other. But when one slides two rough sides along each other, it gets warm, and sometimes so hot that people say, “I’m not going to church anymore,” and they stay home, not realizing that they are running away from God’s pruning process, too bad.

So if you are a true born again Christian, I hope you will be an active member of a local church and that you will take to heart the words of Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” And that is certainly true now in our time.

One more thing, the church is Christ’s bride. How do you think Jesus feels when you turn away from, or have no respect for His bride?

“Wie heeft de Kerk/Gemeente nu nog nodig?”

“Ik heb Jezus, ik heb de Kerk/Gemeente niet nodig.” Ik heb dit al heel wat malen gehoord en het doet me pijn. Jezus zegt in Matt.16, “Ik zal mijn Gemeente bouwen.” Veel mensen antwoorden op de vraag waarom Jezus naar de aarde kwam met, “om aan het kruis te sterven.” En dat is natuurlijk waar, maar waarom moest Hij op het kruis sterven? Om voor onze zonden te boeten, om ons te verlossen en om dan Zijn Gemeente te bouwen. Hij stierf, stond op uit de dood, keerde terug naar de hemel en zond de Heilige Geest op de dag van Pinksteren, met welk doel? Zijn Gemeente te bouwen! Het hele boek Handelingen gaat over de bouw van zijn Gemeente, het begin en de groei van de Gemeente en de gemeenten. Negen N.T. brieven zijn geschreven aan plaatselijke gemeenten, drie aan gemeentewerkers en de rest aan gemeenteleden, hoe kan men dan de gemeente missen of zeggen, “Ik heb de Gemeente niet nodig?”

De gemeente is één van Gods instrumenten om ons te vormen en ons te maken naar het beeld van Zijn Zoon. Hij brengt alle christenen, onvolmaakte en gebroken mensen, samen in de gemeente als ruwe diamanten die geslepen moeten worden. En dat gebeurd wanneer onze schouders langs elkaar wrijven. Maar wanneer men twee ruwe kanten langs elkaar wrijft, ontstaat er warmte, en soms kan het dan zo heet worden, dat de christen zegt, “ik ga niet meer naar de gemeente” en hij of zij blijft thuis, niet beseffende dat hij/zij het snoeingsprocess van God ontloopt, zo jammer!

Dus als u een echte wedergeboren christen bent, dan hoop ik dat u een actief lid zult zijn van een plaatselijke gemeente en dat u de woorden van Hebr.10:24-25 ter harte zult nemen, “En laten wij op elkander acht geven om elkaar aan te vuren tot liefde en goede werken. Wij moeten onze eigen bijeenkomst niet verzuimen, zoals sommigen dat gewoon zijn, maar elkander aansporen, en dat des te meer, naarmate gij de dag ziet naderen.” En dat is zeker relevant in onze tijd nu.

Nog één ding, de Gemeente is de bruid van Christus. Hoe denkt u dat Jezus zich voelt wanneer wij ons afkeren van, en geen respect hebben voor Zijn bruid?

According to the gospel of John, the first miracle Jesus performed was turning water into wine. Many people are familiar with the story of the wedding at Cana. I just read this last week again and every time I read it I have to smile. You see, in the Psalms we read that God has made wine to make glad the heart of men, amazing. The very first miracle Jesus does is making something to make people happy. The reason I smile every time I read this is likely because I grew up with the idea that believing in God meant always having a serious face and no fun whatsoever.

I’m not advocating drinking alcohol, to the contrary, look what terrible things happen as a result of too much wine. God made wine to make us happy, not dangerous.

I want to focus on WHEN the miracle took place, it was when the servants obeyed the Lord. Isn’t that the secret to seeing miracles happen, plain and instant obedience?

Volgens het Johannes evangelie was het veranderen van water naar wijn het eerste wonder dat Jezus deed. Vele mensen kennen het verhaal van de bruiloft te Kana. Ik las het opnieuw verleden week en iedere maal als ik het lees, moet ik glimlachen. Ziet u, in de Psalmen zegt God dat Hij wijn gemaakt heeft om het hart van de mens blij te maken, wonderlijk. Het allereerste wonder dat Jezus doet is iets maken om mensen blij te maken. De reden voor mijn glimlach is waarschijnlijk omdat ik opgroeide met het (verkeerde) idee dat in God geloven betekent altijd ernstig zijn en geen plezier mogen hebben.

Ik pleit hier niet voor het drinken van alkohol, integendeel, ziet eens wat een ellende het al veroorzaakt heeft. God heeft wijn gemaakt om ons blij te maken, niet om ons gevaarlijk te doen zijn.

Ik wil hier gewoon wijzen op WANNEER het wonder gebeurde, het was toen de dienstknechten de Heer gehoorzaamden. Is dat niet het geheim om wonderen te zien gebeuren, eenvoudige en onmiddelijke gehoorzaamheid?

Are you a real Christian? For non-Christians, the following words are foolishness, just plain nonsense, but for me, a true child of God, these words are so precious, they touch me and resonate deep within my heart. And that is true for millions of others all over the world. What about you?
“18 For the word (preaching) of the cross (Jesus crucified) is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved it is the power of God.” (1Cor.1:18)

And then it goes on:
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” (1Cor.1:22-24).
