MUSINGS OF AN “OLDER” MAN”. Nr.168.

Nr.167 ended with: “ In 1987 we returned to Canada, this time for quite an extended, and also a difficult and trying period, when our faith was severely tested, but more about that next time………! (See richardandmarina.net).

The last time we were in Canada was in 1983, now we returned there for furlough, also called ‘home assignment’, in July ’87. But this time it was different as our oldest daughter Rosa was not well at all. She was so weak, she was not able to function normally. When she was at Capernwray Bible School in southern Germany, she had picked up mononucleosis (mono). Because it was not treated right, it turned into something else. Here are Rosa’s own words: “I was finally after 8 years going to doctors in Belgium, Germany, Holland and here diagnosed with M.E. (Myalgic Encephalopathy, not CFS. (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). All types of people at all ages are affected. Severe and debilitating fatigue, painful muscles and joints, disordered sleep, gastric disturbances, poor memory and concentration are commonplace. In many cases, onset is linked to a viral infection, like mononucleosis. Other triggers may include an operation or an accident, although some people experience a slow, insidious onset.

ME/CFS has attracted more than its fair share of controversy. Initially, and for many years, there was a debate as to whether it was actually an illness at all. Although the situation is still not perfect, many influential bodies, (The World Health Organization, the Department of Social Security, the Department of Health, the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Psychiatrists and General Practitioners among them) are now in agreement that it is real.

About 30 years ago when we were here, Rosa had not been diagnosed yet with M.E. and there was much confusion as to what ailed her. It was an extremely difficult time, as we sought help, even going down to a Christian psychiatrist in the US, but not getting any help. I went to see a doctor in the London area who had the illness himself, but he was not able to help us either. And so we rented an apartment in Elmira and stayed with Rosa as we did not feel right to just leave her. But it was hard to not be in Belgium where the Lord had called us, so we kept on praying and seeking His will.

At the same time the Lord opened up all kinds of opportunities and ways of ministry, such as helping to start a new church here in Canada. He is faithful and blessed us wonderfully, in spite of the difficult circumstances. More about His guidance and blessings next time……….! (Go to Musings).

 

OVERPEINZINGEN VAN EEN “OUDERE” MAN. Nr.168.

Nr.167 eindigde met: “ In 1987 keerden we terug naar Canada, deze keer voor een langere, en ook moeilijker periode, en werd ons geloof werkelijk op de proef gesteld, maar meer daarover de volgende maal………..! (Zie richardandmarina.net).

De laatste keer dat we in Canada waren was 1983. Nu keerden we terug voor verlof, ook wel genoemd “home assignment”, “thuisopdracht” in juli 1987. Maar deze maal was het anders omdat onze oudste dochter Rosa niet goed was. Zij was heel zwak en kon niet normaal functioneren. Toen ze in zuid Duitsland op Capernwray Bible School was, kreeg ze mononucleosis (mono). Omdat het niet op de juiste manier behandeld was geweest, werd het iets anders. Hier zijn Rosa’s eigen woorden, “Eindelijk, na acht jaar dokters te hebben bezocht in Belgie, Nederland, Duitsland en hier, werd vastgesteld dat ik M.E. ((Myalgic Encephalopathy, niet CVS. Allerlei mensen van alle leeftijden zijn aangedaan. Ernstige en slopende vermoeidheid, pijnlijke spieren en gewrichten, verstoorde slaaprust, maagstoringen, geheugenverlies en zwakke concentratie zijn alledaags. In vele gevallen is een virale infectie, zoals mononucleosis, de aanzet. Ook een operatie of een ongeluk kunnen het begin zijn, alhoewel sommige mensen een tragere verradelijke aanvang ervaren.

ME/CVS heeft al haar deel van controversie meegemaakt. Oorspronkelijk, en voor vele jaren, was er discussie of het wel echt een ziekte was. Alhoewel de situatie nog steeds niet perfect is, zijn vele invloedrijke organisaties (De Wereld Gezondheids Organisatie, Het departement van Sociale Veiligheid, het Departement van Gezondheid, het Koninklijke College van Geneesheren, Psychiaters en Artsen) het er nu over eens dat het wel degelijk een rieële ziekte is.

Ongeveer 30 jaar geleden was nog niet bij Rosa vastgesteld dat zij M.E. had en er was heel wat verwarring over wat haar nu eigenlijk scheelde. Het was een heel moeilijke tijd, terwijl wij hulp zochten, door zelfs naar een christelijke psychiater in de VS te gaan, die ons niet helpen kon. Ik bezocht ook een dokter in de omgeving van London, On. die zelf ook M.E. had maar die ons ook niet kon helpen. En dus huurden wij een appartement in Elmira en bleven wij bij Rosa, omdat wij het niet juist vonden haar in deze toestand alleen te laten. Maar het was moeilijk niet in België te kunnen zijn waar de Heer ons geroepen had te werken en dus bleven we bidden en Zijn wil zoeken.

Tegelijkertijd gaf de Heer allerlei mogelijkheden om Hem te dienen, zelfs in het starten van een nieuwe gemeente hier in Canada. Hij is getrouw en zegende ons wonderlijk, ondanks de moeilijke omstandigheden. Meer hierover de volgende maal……………….! (Ga naar Overpeinzingen).
